Where Devotion Meets Divine Power: Puliyampulli Vishnumaya Temple Thrissur

In a quiet corner of Valapad, a sacred space holds generations of faith. Take a short drive from Thriprayar to the divine Vishnumaya temple in Thrissur, which stands strong, both in structure and in spirit. Far more than a place of worship, people come when the world feels heavy, and something deep within them yearns for light. At this vishnumaya temple, both Bhadrakali and vishnumaya swamy are worshipped side by side. There's no hierarchy, no one above the other. And that balance? It's rare. This energy has been kept alive through the grace of Puliyampulli Namboothri Achan, a name etched into the temple's very soul. What you feel here isn't forced. It's not about grand displays or loud declarations. It's about connection. Quiet prayers. Open hearts. And rituals like Mayaseva, Karinkuruthi, and Uruli Kamazhthal offered not out of fear, but trust. People don't come here because they're told to. They come because something pulls them back.

Long ago, Puliyampulli Namboothiri Achan set out on a spiritual journey. Along the way, he heard about a powerful yogi named Kunjiraman Muthachan, known for his deep devotion and mystical powers. Drawn by curiosity and reverence, Puliyampulli came to this sacred spot. There, he witnessed something extraordinary Kunjiraman Muthachan in deep trance, with Kalidevi on one side and Vishnumaya Swamy on the other. It wasn't just a sight. It stirred something deep within him. Seeing the result of the yogi's intense worship the siddhi he had attained Puliyampulli felt an unexplainable pull. That moment became more than a meeting. It became a beginning. That's how this divine temple took shape from one vision, one night, and one sacred calling. Now, the Kuttichathan temple continues to welcome everyone those who believe, those who hope, and even those who simply wonder. It's a place that doesn't push. It pulls gently. And for many, that's all they've ever needed.

Vishnumaya Swami – Annual Kumbham Festival

Every year, during the Malayalam month of Kumbham, the 4day annual Kumbham festival turns Puliyampulli Namboothiri Achan Madam into a vibrant space of faith, devotion, and energy. It's a much awaited time for the locals and devotees, when traditions come alive and they gather with hopes, prayers, and offerings. This four-day festival is marked by age old customs, vibrant rituals, and spiritual performances that resonate with the hearts of all those present. Day One opens with sacred ceremonies. A kalam is drawn for Sri Puliyampilly Namboothiri, followed by Thottampattu sung for Sri Durga Bhagavathi. Special pujas are held throughout the day, setting a divine mood for what's to come. On Day Two, attention shifts to Kali Bhagavathi. The atmosphere changes. There is a buzz in the air when five decorated elephants line up for the ezhunnallippu. Drums begin to beat. Chants rise slowly. People gather—some with their hands folded, others just watching in awe. It's not just a procession; it's a moment that quietly stays with you. It's a sight that stays with you long after the day ends. Day Three begins early around 4 AM with abhishekams and worship dedicated to Vishnumaya Chathan Swami. His Brahmavellattu and the dazzling Thira Mahotsavam fill the space with intense energy. Many believe that on this day, Swami's blessings reach the devotees instantly, like a flow of nectar into their very hands. Come night, the atmosphere takes on a magical quality. At 9 PM, the Swami's ezhunnallippu moves out in full glory. Artists perform traditional dances like Karayattam, Thirayattam, Mayooranritham, Arjunanritham, and Kavadiyattam. The entire Kuttichathan temple is lit with camphor, incense, and oil lamps. It's said that even the gods stop to watch. The final day, Day Four, is set aside for the mountain deities. The air turns calm and intense at once as Kalam Pattu is offered with quiet devotion. One of the most awaited rituals Guruthi Puja is performed on this day. It holds deep meaning for those battling unseen struggles, be it enemy threats, dark energies, or astrological troubles like Chovva dosham. For many who take part, this moment brings a sense of relief—and sometimes, a fresh start.

Kalamezhuthu Pattu Festival

This special ritual, known as Roopa Kalam Ezhuthu, is held three times a year. It takes place during the Malayalam months of Mithunam (mithunam -June–July) and Thulam (thulam-October–November), ahead of the Mandala season, which falls in the Malayalam months of Karkidakam and Vrischikam.

The main highlight of this ritual is the Roopakalam (roopakalam), a sacred floor art drawn using multi-coloured powders (bahuvarna podikalal). This vibrant creation is considered highly important (athi pradhanam) and holds divine energy when performed with proper vows and observances (vritha-anushtanam). According to legend (aithihyam), this age-old tradition has been practiced just like in ancient times, without losing its originality.

On these sacred days, devotees visit the Kuttichathan temple and have darshan (darshanam) of the Roopakalam. Participating in the special poojas (prathyeka poojakal) and witnessing the ritual is believed to remove all kinds of afflictions (sakala doshangalum pariharam) and fulfill one’s heartfelt wishes.
